Our new Caribbean Dawn
community is officially six months old already, and Before the Mast
will be turning eight years old next month. To many more years together! Warm thanks to everybody who has made it possible for our writing community to flourish and for the story to get further! There won’t be big festivities for Before the Mast’s
eighth anniversary, since now it has left only few stories to write there, and it surely will be completed and closed long before the ninth anniversary, but on New Year’s Eve we’ll celebrate, in style, a year of Caribbean Dawn
. Both are impressive achievements in this fleety world.
It is difficult, however, to assess how active the people are, since many haven’t written much since the latest issue of the Chronicles. We do not have an activity rule, neither activity checks, but people who don’t have any online presence, not even replying to e-mails, besides not participating to the stories, can be labeled more as fans than actual members, so we should know we can’t count on them and their characters. If they choose to return, they are warmly received back and they are given the possibility to reintegrate their characters into the story. But the story has to go forward, with as many writers and characters as available at any given moment. Therefore, those who haven’t answered the e-mail/ message sent to them about their activity, were considered as giving up and archived.
As per the 1-st of July 2018, statistics show that "Caribbean Dawn" has:
Active writers: 10
Active characters: 46
, out of which:Islanders = 27Seafarers = 18Wanderers = 1Men= 19Women = 27
Various lists have been updated with this opportunity.
As for thread/ quote spotlight
, the Taino Native from Hispaniola, Makkigawea
, written by Mascha
, must be highlighted for the best in-character quote
from the thread Building bridges
:While they seemed too be quite different, Makki could sense the lack of understanding in his eyes when she prevented him from cutting his way through he forest. Somehow, it annoyed her even more that he was so arrogant that he could not even comprehend that his culture and way of though wasn’t the only one and it was definitely not the right one. “Peace requires trust,” she told him with a sneer and looked down at his cutlass. “I agree to take you to my tribe and you do this?” she said and reached for a vine that was cut in two. Her home was this island and this man was cutting his way through it like it didn’t matter to him at all. ”If you cut into our home you will not receive a warm welcome in my village,” she told him. It was probably the best she could do. She didn’t expect the foreigner to become any less arrogant, but as little as she liked his company, at least she felt that she had given him plenty warning in regards to his disrespectful behaviour.
It is well written, showing the difference in thinking between the two characters and the clash of cultures with opposite values. If we take into account that English isn't the writer's mother tongue, she deserves more congratulations for it!
As you can see, it is already September 1720 in the story
. (Which, of course, doesn't mean that we have finished all the August stories, just that we have the opportunity to move forward too). L'Amazone
spends a few days in Havana, then it returns to Port-de-Paix just to leave immediately for Kingston, where they would stay the whole end of the month, including Michaelmas
holiday, as an opportunity for the sailors of L'Amazone
to interact with the people of Kingston, who are rather isolated otherwise. And a religious, public holiday can bridge the social status gap too, for one day and one night...
I am offering my warmest thanks, indiscriminately, to all the crew of “Before the Mast”, and now "Caribbean Dawn", who had been sticking with us for so many years.
A few of our older crewmates, sailing with us for a longer time, haven’t posted in the introduction forum
yet, and our new members do not know them. This is something to remediate, as we have now a forum, enabling a new thread for each member, and a questionnaire
meant to find common points between newer and older members, and facilitate discussion subjects. So, please open a thread where answering to the introduction questionnaire, and browse the other replies, looking for people sharing any common interests with you. Now the introduction threads can be an open discussion with the others, for strengthening community and friendship among writing partners!
You know also that we need fresh blood of the history-loving, writing
and dedicated kind… I am making an appeal to all of you to bring other friends of yours who are into writing swashbuckling adventures, because the word of mouth is the most powerful way of advertising. Also, I'd like you to tell me which other ways of advertising you consider efficient and how we can get new members, because the truth is that, due to the site becoming way slower, we have remained mostly the core members writing together for 5+ years. We would need also new blood of the writing and staying kind, and this start of the "Caribbean Dawn" stories is the best moment for others to join!
In addition to this, the ones who have blogs, LiveJournal or InsaneJournal accounts, please advertise “Caribbean Dawn” and try to bring new members. Those who have Facebook accounts – please “Like” our page
and spread the word! Those with Twitter
, follow us and retweet/ reblog some of our messages!
Voting daily in the topsites also helps… You can find them herebelow, in the Chronicles, and under the fourth crown above the c-box.
[dohtml]Help us be seen and grow with gaining new valuable members! You can give your contribution to our site’s growth, and you’ll have more people and characters to write with! Each person’s effort counts in making our writing community better, sounder, more active or bigger! Happy writing and a nice summertime!
