FemaleOccupation or title:
Daughter of a rich bankerBirth place:
Uzes, FranceCurrent Location:
Port de Paix, HaitiCharacter Face Claim:
Hailee SteinfeldGeneral appearance:
Eliana has always been a bit uncomfortable about her physical appearance, being on the tall side for females and quite conscientious about it. She is of average build however with a flat bust, something she also dislikes about herself. Her hair is shoulder length and black, her eyes hazel (from her mother)and almost Oriental, hinting a non-European ancestry at some point in the family history. Suspicious of people who tell her so, she does not think herself particularly beautiful. Her smile and good set of teeth are her best asset she believes though she really needs to smile more often.Clothing:
Having money allows her to dress well and she takes advantage of it, her wardrobe is extensive and colorful. Of course the dresses and coats were all suited for living in France and now the much more tropical Caribbean climate might necessitate some fashion changes or additions.Personality:
Eliana is above all else very intelligent and it comes out in her conversations and actions. Her father saw to it she has been well educated with expensive private tutors and from childhood she took to it like a duck to water. Now that she in the unexpected heir to her father's banking trade, she is quitely confident she can handle the intricacies of finance. But of course it is a man's world and she on less steady ground there, a certain shyness at dealing with menfolk may prove difficult to overcome. She is normally pleasant, kind to her servants, and tolerant in many things. But she can be very stiff necked and stubborn at times too, when she fervently believes she is in the right. While certainly she is interested in men, she sees courtship and marriage as business necessities at some point but not eager for such a union so far in her life. Her father taught her that given their religion and background, Jews face dangers and risks over and above most people and to always keep that in mind. But she is determined not to be intimidated or betray her past.Family:
Father- Benjamin - Deceased (plague in Marseilles)
Mother - Hala - Died when Eliana was a child, food poisoning
Brother - Aaron - Killed in a riot at age 21.History:
Born the second child of Benjamin and Hala Havel in the small city of Uze in southwestern France, Eliana had the good fortune to be welcomed into a prosperous home with caring parents and a doting older brother. The War of Spanish Succession erupted and consumed the energies and often the people of Louis XIV's France but for her father his business flourished as he was the capable head of a long established banking house. They are members of the Sephardic branch of the Jewish faith. Being Jewish the males of the family were exempt from military service but paid high taxes in it's stead. Yet being Jewish also presented the Havels with high risk and strong prejudices too against any non-Christian in Europe. It was a juggling act of profit and bias that Benjamin seemed quite capable of performing so the family led a good life.
As a child, Eliana of course did not realize any of this until she grew older and had it all carefully presented to her by her watchful father. She had a happy childhood, she was healthy and the parents noticed quite early possessed of a sharp mind. This led to Benjamin seeing to it the girl was given the best education possible hiring in expensive tutors. Eliana did not disappoint and excelled at most subjects, unlike her older but uninterested brother. Though they were close enough, the pair were really not much alike in most things. Aaron used his handsome looks and outgoing personality to enjoy life at the fullest, often exasperating his more traditional parents. Meanwhile Eliana was the dutiful good daughter. Her one major heartbreak though was the sad unexpected death of her mother when Eliana was only twelve. For some time it seemed nothing could console her.
Benjamin knew the good times might not always last in France, once before in French history the Jews had all been expelled and there were no guarantees it could not happen again someday so he threw his resources and expertise into establishing a bank in the French colony on Saint Domingue, located at Port de Paix. Yet he was too attached to his home in Uze to desire to take the risky voyage across the ocean and manage it personally. Instead he sent a trusted younger man to run it. Still it remained a possible new home should things deteriorate in France.
Eliana had no hint of how fast her world would change as she celebrated her nineteenth birthday but right after her family's fortunes took a tragic downslide. It started with her carefree brother getting caught up in a silly brawl in a local townhouse establishment. It ended up turning into a nasty riot suddenly leveled at he and his Jewish friends, escalating into violence and finally murder. Aaron was beaten to death in an alley before the authorities were able to intervene. Benjamin had lost his heir, Eliana her happy go lucky brother who had always been so helpful for lifting her out of her often more somber moods.
Things only got worse. She and her father were living in Marseilles at the time, so the aging Benjamin could more easily manage his banking house there, when the dreaded plague was reported inside the city itself! Panic set in. There were options available especially for those with money. A quick flight into the interior was the easiest but often futile as the terrifying disease spread through the roads with stunning speed. Or embark onto a ship and put the sea between oneself and this merciless killer. Benjamin acted without hesitation and secured a passage for Eliana, her maid servant, and a trusted bodyguard on the Acadie
for Port de Paix. She did not want to leave and especially without her father going with her but he insisted speed was of the utmost importance. He had too much to tie up with the bank to leave for now. Maybe after all this plague business had subsided he assured her he would join her on the island. They shed a tearful goodbye, both of them strongly suspected it would not turn out like he presented it. Benjamin's health had been failing the past few years already, his daughter had warned him often he was working himself to death.
Thus it was that twenty year old Eliana Havel disembarked at the docks of Port de Paix, unprepared but still determined to live the next chapter of her life. It would be some months later when she found out the sad truth, her father and rest of the household had perished in the plague. She was alone. Her father's bank in the port was now hers, she had all the necessary papers to prove it. It was going to be a huge challenge for the largely sheltered young woman to see if she could follow in her father's footsteps. Weapon Skills:
