“L'Amazone” is a frigate, a fifth rate ship-of-the-line of the French Navy, built in 1707 in Toulon shipyards and assigned to the French colonies in the West Indies in 1717.
She currently has as main port now Port de Paix, its primary mission being the protection of Saint Domingue against any enemy attacks and defending the French merchant vessels from pirates.
Weighing 752 tons and measuring 43 m. length, the ship has two decks and three tall masts, with full rigging (square sails). She holds 42 guns, located as follows:
-14 thirty six pound guns on the lower deck (the rest of the lower deck being used for the sailor's quarters and for row ports)
- a full battery of 22 eighteen pound guns on the upper deck
- two "long nine" bow chasers and two "long nine" stern chasers on the main deck.

As a full rigged ship she can reach speeds of up to 11 knots in a casual wind. Her compliment consists of 500 men, 150 of whom are highly trained soldiers.
Her captain is Phillipe de Sorel, the son of the Governor of Saint Domingue
